How to Fix a Disabled Trackpad in Boot Camp

One issue that I have noticed with creating an image for boot camp for multible Macs, is the trackpad does not work when you image a different model that the image wasn’t orginally created on. One fix is to uninstall and reinstall the bootcamp software, which I find doesn’t work all the time. There is another way to fix it which is a bit quicker. Basically you have to install the generic Microsoft drivers first, then install the apple drivers. Here is how to do so, granted there may be other ways, maybe some easier than this way, but you get the point.

How to Fix a Disabled Trackpad in Boot Camp

One issue that I have noticed with creating an image for boot camp for use of multiple Macs, is the trackpad does not work when you image a different model than the image wasn’t orginally created on. One fix is to uninstall and reinstall the bootcamp software, which I find doesn’t work all the time. There is another way to fix it which is a bit quicker. Basically you have to enable the track, install the generic Microsoft drivers first, then install the apple drivers. Here is how to do so, granted there may be other ways, maybe some easier than this way, but you get the point.

  1. Right click on “My Computer”, and select “Properties”
  2. Goto the “Hardware” tab and click the “Device Manager” button
  3. Find the trackpad device, usually located under “Human Interface Devices”
  4. Right click on the trackpad device, and select “Enable”
  5. Right click again on the trackpad device and select “Update Driver”
  6. At the first prompt select “No, Not at this time” and click “Next”
  7. At the second prompt, select “Install from a list of specific location (advanced)” and click “Next”
  8. At the next prompt, select “Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install” and click “Next”
  9. Choose “USB Human Interface” and click “Next”
  10. Repeat steps 5 thru 8, this time selecting “Apple Trackpad” instead of “USB Human Interface” and click Next

The trackpad should now be working. There is a way to script this process using a bat file, so you can setup your sysprep in your image to fix the trackpad for you. More on that soon.
